‘Lost little girl’ from Battle Creek finds her birth family

Lehmann’s story begins with her adoption. “Carl and Berniece Peterson of Battle Creek couldn’t have children because she was a severe diabetic. They adopted my brother, Mark, from Sioux City and then they adopted me.

“We were seven and eight when our mother, Berniece, died of diabetes at Christmas. Our grandparents didn’t like us because we were adopted, so my mother’s cousin, Arlo and Nellie Behn, raised me. I always wondered about my heritage because Arlo and Nellie thought I was part Indian."
