City sets Moorehead Avenue bridge weight restrictions

In response to the current condition of the Moorehead Avenue bridge, the Ida Grove City Council passed a resolution June 4 establishing weight restrictions for all vehicles on the bridge of 22 tons for special hauling vehicles (straight trucks, dump trucks, etc.) and 36 tons for all other trucks. The city will order weight limit signs for the bridge. The restrictions will be enforced when the signs are installed.

Cody Forch of JEO Engineering noted the weight restrictions will cause a problem for oversized loads, especially at harvest time. “The bridge will handle standard loads, but it will be a problem for overloaded trucks. They (oversized loads) will have to use the bridge on Harold Godbersen Drive or the bridge on Washington Avenue.”

The council decided against setting a designated truck route to the elevator at this time. The council noted it will work with the Department of Transportation (DOT) to enforce the load limit on the Moorehead Avenue bridge.
