Falcons claim district title with one-point win over A-A

The OABCIG boys’ basketball team saved the best for last in defeating Alta-Aurelia 39-38 in a class 2A district tournament final in Cherokee Feb. 19. The Falcons never led until the final 43 seconds of play.

OABCIG sophomore Cooper DeJean scored the Falcons’ final five points, including two free throws, to give OABCIG its only lead with 43 seconds left.

“The kids were pretty excited,” noted coach Steve Brown. “The main thing is, we get to move on. We’re down to 16 teams (in class 2A) in the state to still be playing, and that is nice to be a part of.”

The Falcons, 18-4, were slated to play Rock Valley, 17-7, in the substate eight final Saturday, Feb. 23, but the game was postponed, due to weather conditions. The game was played Monday, Feb. 25. The game was played after the Courier newspaper was printed.
