Father, son dead following drive out on ice in Storm Lake

Two people are dead and two small children injured after a vehicle fell through the ice on Storm Lake. The children involved are OABCIG Elementary students.

Buena Vista County Sheriff Kory Elston said emergency personnel responded after receiving a report of the situation at approximately 5:42 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 20.

Deputies, police officers and firefighters located one adult man and his three small children in the lake northwest of the big island about a half-mile from Chautauqua Park and brought them to shore. They were transported via Buena Vista Regional Medical Center ambulance to the hospital, where Zackary Newlon, 40, of Anthon and his eight-year-old son were later pronounced dead. The girls, ages nine and five, were transported by air to a Sioux Falls, S.D., hospital.

The girls, Sydney (nine) and Sophie (five), were flown by plane to the burn center at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City for treatment of severe frostbite on their hands and feet, according to the girls’ great-aunt, Eve Freeman, Zackary’s paternal aunt.
