IG council considers hiring firm to abate nuisances, sets city staff wages

The Ida Grove City Council met with a Sioux City firm that helps small communities with nuisance abatements and approved city staff wages for the coming fiscal year at its July 1 meeting.

Dave Christiansen of Absolute Inspection Services of Sioux City met with the council to discuss services his firm can provide the city, as far as dealing with issues the city may have in regard to building inspections and permitting, zoning and zoning administration and nuisance abatement. Most of the discussion involved nuisance abatements.

Christiansen noted, if the city retains his services, his first step is to come to town and drive each block to find out where the problem areas are. He then sends courtesy letters to property owners, asking them to correct the nuisance.

Christiansen said, if the property owner has not shown any progress toward correcting the nuisance following the courtesy letter, a second letter is sent, giving the owner 30 days to abate the nuisance. If, after 30 days no progress has been made, the property owner is taken to court.
