IHSAA says fall sports will begin as scheduled

The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA), which is the governing body for boys’ athletics in Iowa, is preparing to begin the 2020 fall sports seasons as currently scheduled. The IHSAA made that announcement Friday.
First practices are set to begin for cross-country, football and Class 4A golf on Aug. 10. The first cross-country meets can be held beginning Aug. 24 and the first football games may be played on Aug. 27.
The statement released Friday noted, “The health and safety of student-athletes and their communities have been our priority as we work to provide opportunities during this pandemic and will remain so as we move forward into the 2020-21 school year. We will continue to work with our partner organizations and within the Iowa state government to develop protocols and sport-specific guidance and will adjust as necessary.”
In Iowa’s unified activities programs, the IHSAA, Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, Iowa High School Music Association and Iowa High School Speech Association, each member school and participant may determine which activities they sponsor or join every school year.
The IHSAA said it will issue sports guidance to member schools the week of July 27.
