OABCIG sends five wrestlers to state tournament.

O-A/BC-IG will send five wrestlers to the class 1A state individual tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines this Thursday. Ridge View did not qualify anyone for the state meet. To qualify for the state meet wrestlers had to place first or second at the district meet in Mapleton Saturday.

O-A/BC-IG juniors Kurtis Krager (113) and Tyler Anderson (195) both placed first at the district meet while seniors Adam Grote (170) and Jeren McKibbin (285) and freshman Jake Nieman (106) placed second.

“While it was not a perfect goal, we did reach one of our goals and that was to qualify all five of our wrestlers for state,” noted coach Randy Nieman. “That was an important step for four of them—get the opportunity to wrestle in the most prestigious state tournament in the nation.”

Krager, who is ranked sixth in the state in class 1A, will be making his third trip to state. He did not place at 106 as a freshman in 2015 and was sixth at 106 as a sophomore in 2016. Krager marked a milestone in his career Saturday at the district tournament by winning the 100th match of his high school career.

O-A/BC-IG’s other grapplers will be headed to state for the first time. Nieman goes into the state tournament ranked eighth at 106 in 1A.

“For Krager this is getting to be old hat,” said Nieman. “I know he has big goals and I feel he is wrestling right now at a level that his goals can become reality.

“I am extremely happy for the two seniors, Grote and McKibbin. They have been varsity starters since they were freshmen and this will be their first trip to the state tournament; a wonderful payoff for their years of hard work and commitment.
