WALKER, MINN. – Services for Vera Louise (Lantz) Stewart, 100, will be at 3 p.m., Tuesday, July 28, 2020, at Northern Peace Funeral Home in Walker, Minn. There will be a one-hour visitation prior to the service. The Rev. Keith Pillar will officiate.
Pallbearers are Larry Anderson, Jeff Woodruff, Murray Bright, Braden Stewart, Jon Stewart and Andy Struffert. Honorary pallbearers are the Walker Red Hatters and Al Maas.
Northern Peace Funeral Home in Walker, Minn., is in charge of arrangements.
She died peacefully July 20, 2020, at her home in Walker, Minn.
Vera was born June 28, 1920, on a farm south of Arthur, to Anna (Larson) and John Lantz. She attended country school and graduated from high school in 1937 in Ida Grove.
She studied normal training and graduated with a teacher’s degree when she was 16. The rule at that time was, you had to be 18 to teach. She took additional schooling and taught one year in a country school in Ida County. She was also employed by Ida County Extension Service.
In 1939, she married Lee Stewart of Ida Grove. They farmed there for 22 years. They then moved to Walker, Minn., in 1961, after purchasing Dick’s Launch Service and Walker Boat Service at the City Dock.
Vera was employed by J.C. Penney’s, Herberger’s, Boeing Aircraft, Woodrest Nursing Home and Cass County U.S. Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. She retired from there as the U.S. Executive Director after 25 years of service.
Vera also managed the launch fishing service, where she employed many local guides and met countless customers with whom she shared walleye fishing stories.
She loved to fish and Leech Lake. She also loved flowers, birds, crocheting, reading and especially bridge. She dearly loved her great-grandchildren; they were the love of her life in her later years.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Bonnie Stewart of Walker, Minn.; a grandson, Jon (Lara) Stewart of Walker, Minn.; and a granddaughter, Krista (Andy) Struffert of Foreston, Minn.
Also surviving are her great grandchildren: Braden, Carver and Ariana Stewart and Brianna and Lee Struffert; a special niece, Sharon Cranston of Cincinnati, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Lee; a special friend, Robert Stonebraker; her parents, John and Anna; a son, Jerry Stewart; her brothers: George, Roy and John Jr.; and her sisters: Estella, Julia, Elna, Helen and Ruth.
