Ridge View battled back from a 16-0 deficit to nip MV-A-O 29-28 in district football play Friday in Holstein. It was the Raptors' homecoming contest.
MV-A-O scored touchdowns on its first two possessions of the game to take a 16-0 lead at the 5:22 mark of the first quarter. The touchdowns came on a 25-yard pass and a 17-yard pass. Both tries for two points were good.
Ridge View coach Jeff DeHaan noted his club was flat to start the game.
"When we fell behind 16-0 I was worried for a little bit," said DeHaan. "But there is no quit in these guys. I knew they would grind something out and battle for four quarters so there was no need to panic."
DeHaan added once his club started to "make a charge" the contest turned out to be a good game.
The Raptors began to make a game of it late in the first quarter and into the second quarter.
With :51 to go in the first quarter, quarterback Ryan Garthoff put the exclamation point on a 73-yard drive by scoring on a six-yard run. He also scored the two-point conversion to make the score 16-8.
MV-A-O pushed its lead back to double digits at 22-8 when a Ram player scooped up a Raptor fumble and returned the ball 55 yards for a touchdown at the 10:13 mark of the second quarter. Garthoff knocked down the two-point pass attempt.
Ridge View was able to knot the score at 22-22 on a pair of drives to close out the first half.
The first drive covered 75 yards and ended with Dru Kenny punching the ball into the end on a one-yard carry at the 5:47 mark of the second quarter.
With 57 seconds before halftime Garthoff passed the ball to Kenny who got in behind MV-A-O's secondary for a 58-yard score.
