Gary Lee Gritten

ODEBOLT – Services for Gary Lee “Gritty” Gritten, 81, of Odebolt will be Saturday, June 19, 2021.

Visitation will be 2 p.m.-3:45 p.m., followed by a prayer service 3:45 p.m.-4:00 p.m., with the Rev. Ken Miller officiating. It will be at Christensen-Van Houten Funeral Home in Odebolt.

Afterwards, all are welcome to join a Celebration of Life Last Ride at 4 p.m., departing from Christensen-Van Houten Funeral Home in Odebolt, in Gary’s honor. Christensen-Van Houten Funeral Home in Odebolt is in charge of arrangements.

He died June 5, 2021, at Odebolt Specialty Care in Odebolt.

He was born April 19, 1940, in Spencer, son of George Virgil Gritten and Grace Edna (DeFrain) Gritten. Gary attended Spencer Community School and United Trade School in Kansas City, Mo.

He met and wed Margaret Jensen in 1956. To this union, he had two sons: Rodney and Lance.

He met the love of his life, Sherlynn Rae “Sherry” Grove, in 1965. They wed in 1966 at Silver Creek United Methodist Church near Galva. He gained two stepchildren: Christine Baker and Barry Baker. With Sherry, he had sons Jason Michael and Matthew David.

In addition to serving on the Odebolt Fire Department, he worked at Mell’s Gas Station, Band M Motors and Midwest Industries. Sherry and Gary owned and operated Gary’s Cafe in Arthur for several years. Then, they opened Frontier Drive-In in Odebolt for two years. Following this, Gary started his trucking career.

He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, along with riding his trike, tinkering around with vehicles and pranking/joking people. He was a member of United Methodist Church in Odebolt.

He is survived by his sons: Lance Hunt and Rodney Hunt, both of Hampton, and Jason (Janet) Gritten and Matthew Gritten, both of Odebolt, and Barry Baker of Manning.

He also is survived by nine grandchildren: Nicole Gritten, Jessy (Travis) Eneboe, Kyle Baker, Sara Gritten, Izraell Gritten, Aavalon Gritten, Brooklyn Gritten, Bailey Gritten and Zander Gritten.

Additional survivors include three great-granddaughters: Aleah Gritten, Ameara Eneboe and Adeline Eneboe. He also leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews.

Gary was preceded in death by his wife, Sherry; his parents, George and Grace Gritten; his siblings; a daughter, Christine Baker; and a granddaughter, Destiney.
