Gerald “Jerry” Henry Gronau, son of Albert L. and Virginia “Boots” (Sandstrom) Gronau, was born Aug. 18, 1941, in Denison. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Stockholm Township, in Deloit.

Jerry attended country school at Stockholm #4, just up the road from his home, and graduated from Denison High School in 1959. He served his country in the Army National Guard from 1959 until 1965.

On Sept. 10, 1961, Jerry married Barbara Ann Hare at St. John’s Lutheran Church. To this union was born three children.

In 2011, they celebrated their 50th anniversary with a catered supper and dance at the Odebolt Community Center with many relatives and friends in attendance.

Jerry and Barb started their married life in Kiron, then Boyer, before settling in Odebolt the last 53 years. He worked for IBP, Kollbaum’s, City of Odebolt and Standard Oil Fertilizer. He owned and operated Jerry’s Standard gas station, Arthur Elevator and finally retired at Beckman Motors.

Jerry enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and playing cards in his earlier years. He loved to listen to KWMT radio station, watch Mountain Men and westerns.

He also enjoyed the “Molly B” polka show and was able to meet her a year ago in Storm Lake and was able to dance to her band.

Jerry always had everything organized. His vehicles and garage needed to be spotless. If you borrowed a tool or anything, he knew it, and it needed to get back in its rightful spot, as everything had its specific nail or hook.

Jerry was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Odebolt, where he served as an usher and trustee. Jerry and Barb also worked as janitors at the church for about four years after he retired.

He was active in the community as a member of the Odebolt Fire Department and served as fire chief and drove for the ambulance crew.

Jerry loved to host family and friends in their home. Family was very important to Jerry, and he showed his love by lending a helping hand to fix things whenever he could. He was always ready with a story or a joke to tell.

Left to share Jerry’s memories are his wife of almost 60 years, Barb Gronau of Odebolt; and his children: Terri Ullrich (Jeff) of Ida Grove, Crystal Gronau of Storm Lake and Keith Gronau (Karen) of Aurora, Colo.

Also surviving are seven grandchildren: Drew Ullrich (Krista), Danielle Bushong (Blake), Coy Clark, Alicia Tjelmeland (Tyler), Abby Gronau, Kate Gronau and Jay Gronau.

Additional survivors include four great-grandchildren: Aria Ullrich, Claire, Drake and Kate Tjelmeland, and baby boy Bushong, coming in August.

Also surviving are two sisters: Jean Kropf and Jane Gronau both of Kiron; a brother-in-law, Larry Hare (Dianne) of Battle Creek; a sister-in-law, Colleen Hare (Larry Garland) of Venice, Fla.; nieces and nephews; many other relatives; and friends.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Virginia Gronau; a brother, Abe, and his wife, Lynne; his parents-in-law, Art and Annabelle Hare; a nephew, Scott Gronau; and three brothers-in-law: Lyle Kropf, Gerald Hare and Richard Hare and his wife, Shirley.
