BATTLE CREEK - Darrell Engelking, 68, of Battle Creek, passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, at the Willow Dale Wellness Village of Battle Creek. 

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2024, with visitation held one hour prior to the service from 10-11 a.m. at the Christensen-Van Houten Funeral Home of Ida Grove. Inurnment will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery of Battle Creek.

The Christensen-Van Houten Funeral Home of Battle Creek, will be in charge of the funeral arrangements.  Condolences may be sent online at www.christensenvanhouten.com.

Darrell Dean Engelking, the son of Dietrich “Dick” and Elsie (Schiernbeck) Engelking was born on Aug. 7, 1955, in Battle Creek. A native of Battle Creek, Darrell received his education in the Battle Creek Community School District and later went on to obtain his GED.

On July 23, 1985, Darrell was united in marriage to Patty Kirkman. The couple were blessed with three boys; Vincent, Kyle, and Scott. Patty later passed away on Jan. 6, 2006. On Nov. 26, 2016, Darrell found love again and married Terri Sharkey at their home in Battle Creek. Darrell welcomed Terri’s two children, Tom and Tami.

Over the years, Darrell worked various jobs. He worked for the Cedar Rapids Gazette newspaper and in a warehouse as a laborer. Most recently, he was employed at Food Pride in Ida Grove and Sparky’s Convenience Store in Battle Creek, before his health forced him into retirement.

In his spare time, Darrell enjoyed the great outdoors. He loved fishing, hunting, grilling, and spending time with his friends and family. He especially treasured his time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.  

Left to carry on his memory are his loving wife Terri Engelking of Battle Creek; children Vincent (Ashleigh) Engelking of Seattle, Washington; Kyle Engelking of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Scott Engelking of Des Moines; Kelly Culver of South Dakota; Tom (Shelley) Sharkey of Battle Creek; and Tami (Shawn) Simmerman of Battle Creek; 19 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren; sister Dar (Eddie) Maybee of Little Sioux; and extended friends and family.

Darrell was preceded in death by his parents Dietrich “Dick” and Elsie Engelking; infant brother Dennis; brothers David Engelking and Darwin Engelking; daughter-in-law Tamara Engelking, and son-in-law Daniel L. Klinger II.
