Frieda Alice (Volkert) Vohs was born on Jan. 10, 1925, to Edmund and Alma (Keller) Volkert. Raised on her family’s farm northwest of Holstein, she learned early the values of hard work, faith, and community that would guide her throughout her life. She attended country schools in Ida and Cherokee counties. Frieda worked a variety of jobs, including two years during World War II as a clerk at Harold Rohlk’s Cash and Carry grocery store in Holstein.
On Oct. 6, 1943, Frieda was united in marriage to Wilbert Vohs at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Holstein. Together, they built a life centered on family and farming, welcoming two sons, Kenneth and Rodney. In 1946, Frieda and Wilbert began farming southeast of Holstein, where they worked side by side for many years before retiring in 1986. They moved into Holstein in 1989. Frieda was a devoted member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church and faithfully served in many roles within W.E.L.C.A. She treasured time spent with family and friends and found joy in life’s simple pleasures — tending her garden and flowers, sewing, golfing, playing bridge, and visiting with family and friends.
She is survived by her sons, Kenneth of Hopkins, Minnesota and Rodney of Round Rock, Texas; six grandchildren, Kathleen Vohs of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Betsy Vohs of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Andrew (Amy) Vohs of Chanhassen, Minnesota, Jennifer Vohs of Shakopee, Minnesota, Justin (Joan) Vohs of Round Rock, Texas, Jacob Vohs of Austin, Texas; seven great-grandchildren, Alexander, Lauren, Oliver, Elijah, Madelyn, Alden and Maverick. She is also survived by sister Carolyn Young of Marshalltown, Iowa, sister-in-law Barbara Volkert of Cherokee, and many nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Will; parents, Edmund and Alma Volkert; parents-in-law, Herbert and Viola Vohs; daughter-in-law Jane (Ken); brother and sister-in-law, Alvin and Erma Volkert; sisters and brothers-in-law, Wanda and Paul Samuelson and Janet and Lorne Hahn; brother, Paul Volkert, brother-in-law, James Young and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Burdell and Helen Vohs and Glenn and Martha Vohs.
