Gloria M. Schmidt
1929 – 2024
SCHLESWIG - Gloria M. Schmidt, 95, of Schleswig, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024 at Eventide of Denison. A funeral will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2024 at 10 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Schleswig with the Pastor Mahnken officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at 9 a.m. at the church. Burial will be at the Holstein Cemetery of Holstein. The family invites those unable to attend the visitation or funeral for a time of remembrance, sharing and a luncheon at Faith Lutheran Church of Holstein at 12:30 p.m. The Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Holstein is in charge of the arrangements.
Gloria Maye Gebers was born on her parents farm southwest of Holstein, March 11, 1929 to Harry and Mabel Olson Gebers. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at St. John’s in Cushing. Gloria was reared on the farm, preferring to be helping her father outdoors. She fondly recalled him saying, “C’mon Shorty, let’s go!” She graduated from Cushing High School in 1946, and began her first full time employment as secretary to the superintendent.
On Sept. 19, 1949, Gloria was united in marriage to Wayne Conover in Council Bluffs. The couple farmed south of Holstein. God blessed this union with two sons, Kevin and Kim. In 1972, God called Wayne (Charlie) to rest. Gloria and the two sons joined together in the farming operation. She also began working for Bye and Bye Printing in Holstein and later was employed by Crary, Huff and Yates law office.
On March 4, 1978, she was united in marriage to Dr. Dayton Schmidt of Schleswig. He, being a veterinarian and farmer, allowed her much loved lifestyle as the farmer’s wife to continue.
Gloria enjoyed her family and friends to the fullest, fishing, playing cards, writing special poems, making up imaginative bedtime stories, knitting slippers, or cooking up a feast from her vegetable garden. While living near Holstein, Gloria was a member of the Lone Star Homemakers Club partaking in fun activities of the neighborhood. Wonderful trips to Europe, Mexico, Canada, throughout the states and a family houseboat trip on the Mississippi made great memories.
Gloria lived out her faith in several capacities at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Holstein and later at Immanuel Lutheran in Schleswig. As the grandkids say, “Grandma had a beautiful soul, always ready with a smile and a kind word for everyone.” “The best thing about Grandma though, is that she was always sure to tell you how much she loved you. She always let us know she was praying for us, and with Grandma, you knew that was the truth. She was a wonderful example of what it looks like to walk with Jesus, with her joyful heart, serving others, continually praying, and quick to give thanks. Her life is a wonderful example to all of us and she will be missed dearly.”
Preceding Gloria in death were her husband Charlie, her parents, Harry and Mabel Gebers, an infant daughter, Carlos Mae in 1952 and two sisters Ferne Bergmann and Verdonna Beyer, two grandsons, Matthew and Michael Conover, stepson Bill Schmidt and one step-granddaughter.
Those left behind to savor her memory are her husband Doc Schmidt of Denison, sons Kevin (Lana) Conover and Kim (Denise) Conover all of Holstein, Cortney (Chris) Harrison with sons Ozzie and Rex of Bozeman Montana, Cami (Rand) Misekow with sons Dane, Stig and Berg of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Eric (Meagan) Conover with children Addie, Bradley, and Layla, of Holstein, Kyle (Holly) Conover and daughter Bailey of Holstein. Also, Fred Schmidt, (Cindy Dapra) of Gillette, Wyoming with sons Luke Schmidt and his son Ryder of Gillette, Wyoming, Zach Schmidt (Megan) and son Jackson of Gilbert, Arizona, Bob (Carla) Schmidt of Pierre, South Dakota, daughters Krista (Justin) Sarvis with children Audra, Austin and Addison, Anne (Brian) Kvamme with children Will, Allie, and Emily, and Don Schmidt.
