HOLSTEIN - Julie A. Modrell, 67, of Holstein, passed away on Friday, July 14, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Society of Holstein. A funeral service was held on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Holstein, with Pastor Bob Lewis officiating. Burial was at the Holstein Cemetery of Holstein. A visitation was held on Monday, July 17, 2023, from 4-7 p.m. at the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Holstein, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. The Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Holstein was in charge of the arrangements.

Julie A. Modrell was born on June 30, 1956, in Cherokee, Iowa to Pete and Betty (Todd) Paulsen. She was a graduate of Holstein High School in 1974. After high school, she started working at Laura Millers Accounting, doing bookwork and accounting. In 1996, she started as a teller at American National Bank. Through the years, she worked herself up to Vice President at the Holstein location. In 2011, she transferred to the UBI location in Ida Grove and worked as an operations assistant and security officer.

Julie was united in marriage to John Modrell III on July 24, 1976, at Trinity Lutheran Church near Marcus. They were blessed with three children, Corey, Amy, and Michael. They lived and farmed near Washta, Iowa.

She was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she played in the Bell Choir and was on the church council. She was also a member of the Good Samaritan Advisory Board and the Iowa Bankers Association. Julie enjoyed scrapbooking for grandchildren, puzzles, flowers, and gardening, reading, mowing, and trimming at the farm, and painting and decorating at their home. She loved spending time with her family and playing cards and games with friends. Julie will be remembered for her drive for success and her hard work ethic. She was a caring person who loved people and always put others first, she had the biggest heart.

She is survived by her husband, John of Holstein, Iowa; mother, Betty Paulsen of Holstein, Iowa; son, Corey (Kristin) Modrell of Wasilla, Alaska; daughter, Amy (Chad) Stensland of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; son, Michael Modrell of Washta, Iowa; grandchildren, Wyatt, Emmett, Greeley and Warren Modrell, Zoe and Piper Stensland and Madison and Trinity Modrell. She is also survived by brother, Jerry (Tina) Paulsen of Holstein, Iowa; sister, Joan Winebrinner of Storm Lake, Iowa; brother-in-law, Jim (Stacy) Modrell of Moville, Iowa; sister-in-law, Joyce (Dave) Johnson of Dumfries, Virginia; and mother-in-law, Marian Modrell of Battle Creek, Iowa; several nieces and nephews as well as extended family in Germany.

Julie was preceded in death by her father, Pete Paulsen; nephew, Tyler Johnson and several family members in Germany.
