Larry Leonard Schumann, loving husband, stepfather, brother, friend, and man of deep and abiding faith, finished his earthly journey and was welcomed home with the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” (Matthew 25:23).

He was born on Jan. 15, 1950, in Ida Grove, to Verna (Burton) and Leonard Schumann. He grew up in Battle Creek and was baptized and confirmed at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Battle Creek. He graduated from Battle Creek High School in 1969.

After graduating, Larry proudly served in the United States Navy as a Seabee in the Construction Battalions from 1969 to 1973. The Seabees’ motto, “We Build, We Fight,” embodied the steady strength and servant-hearted spirit he demonstrated both in uniform and at home. His service shaped his strength, resilience, and deep love of country.

On April 13, 1996, he married Linda Bond at the Church of God in Ida Grove. He was a devoted husband and a steady presence in her life. Larry was a man who showed love through action. Whether it was fixing a car, offering practical advice, or simply lending a kind ear and a prayer, he made sure everyone knew they could count on him.

An avid reader of Christian literature, Larry loved educating himself and others about the teachings of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Those who knew him will remember his calm demeanor, inquisitive nature, and hearty laugh. He was also a great lover of animals, particularly the many cats he cherished and cared for over the years.

He is survived by his loving wife, Linda of Arthur; stepchildren Wendy Gent of Cherokee, and Kevin Laumbach of Stevens Point, WI; siblings Jacki Kalina of Denver, CO, Lyle Schumann of Schleswig, Joy (Maynard) Ohl of Norfolk, NE and Joleen (Jim) Robinson of Storm Lake; brother-in-law LeRoy (Signe) Bond of Ida Grove; as well as extended family, his church family, and friends who loved him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard Schumann, and his mother, Verna Schumann.

His absence leaves a space that cannot be filled, but his love and devotion to his family and Christ will remain with us always. We rejoice in the promise that we will be reunited again with him one day.
