Audrey J. Schubert
1930 – 2023
HOLSTEIN - Audrey J. Schubert, 92, of Holstein, passed away on Friday, June 9, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Society of Holstein. A funeral service was held on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at 4 p.m. at the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Pastor Bob Lewis officiating. Visitation was held on Monday, June 12 from 5-7 p.m. at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Holstein. Burial was at the Holstein Cemetery of Holstein. The Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Holstein was in charge of the arrangements.
Audrey Joyce Breyfogle Schubert, 92 of Holstein, held the hand of God and went home on June 9, 2023. Audrey was born Sept. 7, 1930, to Harold and Ethel (Tolzin) Breyfogle in rural Ida County. She was the second oldest of 13 children, and she took great pride in caring for her younger siblings. Audrey was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Her church and faith meant a great deal to her through her entire life. She was a matriarch of both her family and her church.
Audrey graduated from Holstein High School and went to work at King and Blaisdell Insurance in Holstein. As a young woman, she traveled to California, Myrtle Beach and the Black Hills with friends and to visit family. She married former classmate, Harold Schubert in 1957, joining him on the family farm. Audrey worked beside Harold as an old-fashioned farm wife working livestock, gardening and whatever was required. She filled her “spare” time with sewing, baking (she had a mean sweet tooth) and reading. She loved books and made sure she took her children to the library every Saturday. She was known to love a mean game of Saran Wrap ball at Christmas. Audrey and Harold often took a coffee break to have a hand of rummy or cribbage. Audrey was a lifelong member of several card groups throughout her life and liked to brag when she got high.
Audrey and Harold were blessed with two children, Barbara and Jon. Barb and Jon in turn blessed them with five grandchildren who brought Grandma a great joy. She was always available to babysit, take them for pizza and hike Moorehead Park, teach them card games and make waffle suppers with real whip cream. She was delighted to finally become a great grandma.
Audrey was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where she was active in circles, lady’s aide, taught Sunday school and Bible school and served on parish education. She was an active member of Holstein Legion Auxiliary in Holstein and held many offices. She was awarded a 50-year membership 2023.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, her parents and parents in law, siblings Verla, Jack, Jerry, Dale and Margaret, as well as brother and sisters in law.
She is survived by her daughter, Barb (Gary) Gebers and her son Jon (Kristi) Schubert. Grandchildren Tyler (Allyson) Gebers, Tanner (Brooke) Gebers and Harrison (Katlyn) Gebers, Maddison (Brady) Ahmann and McKinley Schubert. Great grandchildren Hayden and Huxley Gebers and Elliot Ahmann and one more Gebers to come in September. Her family remembers and respects her tremendous tenacity, faith and love. May her memory live on in joy in the hearts who love her.
