BATTLE CREEK - Orville G. Hummelgard, 87, of Battle Creek, passed away on Monday, Aug. 14, 2023, at the Willow Dale Wellness Village of Battle Creek.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Aug. 18, 2023, at the St. John’s Lutheran Church of Battle Creek. Rev. Randy D. Cormeny will officiate. Committal Services will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery of Battle Creek. A Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2023, at the St. John’s Lutheran Church of Battle Creek. The Christensen-Van Houten Funeral Home of Battle Creek, is in charge of the funeral arrangements. Condolences may be sent online at www.christensenvanhouten.com.
Orville G. Hummelgard, the son of George and Lillian (Reincke) Hummelgard was born on Jan. 30, 1936, on the family farm by Danbury. He was baptized and confirmed at the St. John’s Lutheran Church of Battle Creek. Orville graduated from Danbury High School in 1954.
On June 10, 1956, Orville was united in marriage to Pauline Dose at the St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church of Mapleton. The couple was blessed with four children: James, Lois, Duane, and Rose Mary. The couple made their home on the family farm raising crops and livestock. Orville and Pauline moved in to Battle Creek in the fall of 2005 and later retired from farming.
Orville was a lifetime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Battle Creek where he served as an elder and held numerous offices. He also mowed the church lawn for many years. Orville served on the REC and NIPCO Boards, the Ida County Compensation Board, was a Garfield Township trustee, and a member of other boards.
As an avid sports fan, Orville enjoyed cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs, and the OABCIG Falcons. He enjoyed playing cards and socializing with his friends. Orville’s greatest joy in life was attending his grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s events.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 67 years Pauline Hummelgard of Battle Creek; his children James Hummelgard of Danbury, Lois (Jeff) Holmes of Battle Creek, Duane (Lauri) Hummelgard of Battle Creek, and Rose Mary (Dan) Grau of Lawton, Iowa; 9 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren: Jason (Mandy) Holmes and Cheyenne and Cora, Becky (Matt) Matthews and Isaiah and Raegan, Jill (Bill) Krueger and Hannah and Emmett, Sarah (Kyle) Wonders and Grace and Nicholas, Sheryl (Whitt) Spaulding and Ellie, Sully, and Stetson, Katie (Mark) Hasler and Makenna and Keegan, Justin Hummelgard and Luca and Milo, Kristi (Eric) Loofe and Mason and Quinn, Michael (Liz) Grau and Scarlett, Julianne, and Eleanor; sister Betty (Ken) Keeney; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Orville was preceded into death by his parents George and Lillian Hummelgard.

Burial: Mount Hope Cemetery, Battle Creek
