Saundra Lou Bumann, the daughter of William L. and Donna L. (Foulke) Salyard, was born on April 18, 1952, in Youngstown, Ohio. She grew up in Youngstown and received her education at Fitch High School graduating with the class of 1970. After high school, Saundra entered the workforce.

While her brother was home on leave from the service with one of his shipmates, Saundra met the love of her life, Dennis R. Bumann. The couple was married on July 7, 1973, at the Old Town Methodist Church in Austintown, Ohio. Dennis was still an active service member at the time, so the couple made their home in Norfolk, Virginia, where he was stationed. The couple was blessed with three children: Allison, Carrie, and Gregory. Upon Dennis’ honorable discharge, the family moved back to his hometown of Schleswig and made it their forever home.

Saundra was a stay-at-home mom when her children were younger. As they got older, she decided to further her education and went back to school to become an LPN. She worked for 32 years as a nurse at Morningside Care Center in Ida Grove.

Family meant the world to Saundra. When her children were younger, she volunteered as a Sunday School teacher, Girl Scout leader, and helped coach the junior bowling league in Schleswig. As she got older, she treasured time spent attending her grandchildren’s activities. In her free time, Saundra enjoyed crocheting and was also an excellent seamstress having made her daughters’ prom and bridesmaids’ dresses. Saundra also enjoyed bowling, golfing, reading mystery novels, putting together jigsaw puzzles, completing logic puzzle books, and watching NASCAR. She was also never one to turn down a competitive game of cards with her family. Saundra will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved her.

Left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 51 years, Dennis Bumann of Schleswig; children Allison (Dustin) Behrendsen of Schleswig, Carrie Landon of Ida Grove, and Gregory (Jessica) Bumann of Council Bluffs; 10 grandchildren: Alyssa, Dustin J., Austin, Derrick, Jarrett, Samantha (Isaiah), Olivia, Joshua, Thomas, and Kaitlyn; three great-grandchildren with one on the way: Harlee, Scarlett, and Emmett; brother Kenneth Salyard of Ohio; sister Shirley Murphy of Ohio; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents William and Donna Salyard; parents-in-law Robert and Irene Bumann; great-grandson Joseph Behrendsen; brother Raymond Salyard; son-in-law Michael Landon; sister-in-law Barbara Salyard; and brother-in-law William Murphy.
