This year's Market on Main will take place each Tuesday during the months of June - September from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. It will once again be downtown Holstein, just west of the main stoplight intersection. There will be a great group of returning vendors from last year along with quite a few new vendors for this year. Vendors will have a great assortment of products, not only including home grown veggies, but also baked goods, farm fresh eggs, fresh cut flowers, jams, jellies, honey and more!
Ida County Republicans had their Legislative Forum and Fireside Chat on Monday, May 15 at the Ida Grove Country Club. GOP Chair Teresa Paulsrud welcomed the attendees and thanked all for coming. There was a prayer and pledge of allegiance, which solidified the tone for the evening.
Meyer Petting Zoo from Holstein brought joy to the residents of Odebolt Specialty Care. OSC celebrated Nursing Home Week, so this was just one of the ways they were celebrating last week. They also had a Community Grill out last Tuesday night and Prairie Pedlar Gardens came on last Thursday.
Angela Scales has worked as the library director at the Ida Grove Library for 10 years now. She started working in libraries when she lived in Kentucky in 2006. When asked how much she likes working at the library,
she said, “It’s fantastic! I enjoy it. I absolutely love it!”
Scales says there are some challenges, but nothing she cannot handle. The library is funded by city, county and state tax dollars. The challenge is making sure we can be open and operating for the community. Also a challenge, Scales says, is providing the right kind of services.
More than 60 awards and scholarships were given out at Seniors Night (OABCIG) on May 10. Just to name a few, the Bernie Saggau award given to Gabe Winterrowd, the Equitable Excellence Scholarship ($20,000) given to Ruth Clark, the Dollars for Scholars scholarships averaging $4,000 each given out to many students, the United Bank of Iowa Scholarship given to Tatum Oldham and Jarret Roeder, the Harold and Leone Godbersen Family Foundation Scholarship, and so many more.
The OABCIG Graduation ceremony took place on Sunday, May 14. This was truly a class of academic excellence with 14 students bringing home an Academic Medallion and Gold Honor Cord, Five students bringing home a Gold Honor Cord, and 19 students with Silver Honor Cords.
The 29th annual Whitey Thompson Hike-Bike-A-Thon was a BIG success!
Total donations (so far) are $81,738 and donations are still coming in. This sets a new record, surpassing the 2022 record of $81,646.
Number of participants: 552.

Commencement at Ridge View HIgh School is set for Sunday, May 21 at 2 p.m. in the North Gym in Holstein. Class officers for 2023 include President Jake Breyfogle, Vice President Beth Mentzer, Secretary Grace Naberhaus, and Treasurer Shania Graybill.
The Ida County Community Betterment Foundation (ICCBF), an affiliate of the Siouxland Community Foundation, recently awarded grants totaling over $128,000 to nonprofit organizations in support of projects and programs throughout Ida County. This brings the total grants awarded to over $1.6 million since the first grants were made in 2006.
The Parade of Bands was the event to see on May 8 at the OABCIG auditorium. Band Director Neil Anders directed the sixth grade band through four songs, more music than any other band tonight, but shorter pieces. They were tunes such as Royal Crown March, Boot Scootin’ Barn Dance, Gentle River, and Dr. Rock.
The seventh and eighth grade band entered the stage and was also directed by Anders. The band amazed us with wonderful tunes such as Colliding Visions, Impressions, and The Spirit of an Eagle. Very impressive was their level of performance.
