Seniors Awards Night presents to Class of 2023 on May 16, following a Baccalaureate presented by ministers from local churches. Class of 2023 class colors were Orange, Gold and Black, as how they were dressed in their robes and stoles. Their Class Motto is “Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment, until it becomes a memory” - Dr. Suess. The Class Officials are President: Jake Breyfogle, Vice President: Beth Mentzter, Secretary: Grace Naberhaus, and Treasurer: Shania Graybill.
Battle Creek-Ida Grove Elementary school had its Kindergarten graduation on May 19. This will be the Class of 2035. The 5th Grade Band sounded stupendous as they began the program playing songs like Indigo Rock and The Good Life. The song The Good Life the band played, included a duet by Keira Baughman and Sophia Buns. Next on the program was the Kindergarten Chorus singing I Like School and On My Way. Then there were Hike-Bike Awards with a challenge by Marcia Cates from United Bank of Iowa to come to the Hike-Bike event every year.
Ridge View High School had their commencement exercises for the graduating class of 2023 on Sunday, May 21. The Ridge View High School Band ushered them in with their Pomp and Circumstance. Superintendent Adam Bisenius gave his welcome speech. There was the introduction of the Valedictorian and Salutatorian. Jake Breyfogle was named the valedictorian, and a grand speech he gave complimenting teachers in his journey. The students were asked to stand who received academic medallions and gold chords. A very large concert choir centered the side bleachers singing “The River.” Ms.
Alex Warnke is an Ida Grove native who has found a home in the Ridge View school district. The Augustana University graduate teaches and coaches multiple grades and sports for the Raptors. Warnke discussed his duties as instructor and coach.
“I teach 8th Grade Math at the middle school in Early in the morning,” he explained. “Then, I teach high school Algebra and Calculus in the afternoon in Holstein. I’m also Head Boys Basketball coach and Head Boys Golf coach.”
The Raptor skipper has personal experience in the sports he coaches.
This year's Market on Main will take place each Tuesday during the months of June - September from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. It will once again be downtown Holstein, just west of the main stoplight intersection. There will be a great group of returning vendors from last year along with quite a few new vendors for this year. Vendors will have a great assortment of products, not only including home grown veggies, but also baked goods, farm fresh eggs, fresh cut flowers, jams, jellies, honey and more!
Ida County Republicans had their Legislative Forum and Fireside Chat on Monday, May 15 at the Ida Grove Country Club. GOP Chair Teresa Paulsrud welcomed the attendees and thanked all for coming. There was a prayer and pledge of allegiance, which solidified the tone for the evening.
Meyer Petting Zoo from Holstein brought joy to the residents of Odebolt Specialty Care. OSC celebrated Nursing Home Week, so this was just one of the ways they were celebrating last week. They also had a Community Grill out last Tuesday night and Prairie Pedlar Gardens came on last Thursday.
Angela Scales has worked as the library director at the Ida Grove Library for 10 years now. She started working in libraries when she lived in Kentucky in 2006. When asked how much she likes working at the library,
she said, “It’s fantastic! I enjoy it. I absolutely love it!”
Scales says there are some challenges, but nothing she cannot handle. The library is funded by city, county and state tax dollars. The challenge is making sure we can be open and operating for the community. Also a challenge, Scales says, is providing the right kind of services.
More than 60 awards and scholarships were given out at Seniors Night (OABCIG) on May 10. Just to name a few, the Bernie Saggau award given to Gabe Winterrowd, the Equitable Excellence Scholarship ($20,000) given to Ruth Clark, the Dollars for Scholars scholarships averaging $4,000 each given out to many students, the United Bank of Iowa Scholarship given to Tatum Oldham and Jarret Roeder, the Harold and Leone Godbersen Family Foundation Scholarship, and so many more.
The OABCIG Graduation ceremony took place on Sunday, May 14. This was truly a class of academic excellence with 14 students bringing home an Academic Medallion and Gold Honor Cord, Five students bringing home a Gold Honor Cord, and 19 students with Silver Honor Cords.
