On March 14, the CrossRidge Evangelical Free Church of Holstein hosted a skating party at the Skate Palace, with a wide variety of pies to choose from, in celebration of National Pi Day. March 14 is called National Pi Day because the date 3-14 correlates with the mathematical term “pi” which rounds off to 3.14. Pi is a mathematical constant, the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. March 14 also happens to be Albert Einstein’s birthday. And 3.14 flipped backwards spells PIE. That can’t be a coincidence!
Some very sweet couples danced at the Father Daughter Dance on the eve of March 18.
Fathers brought their young daughters to the OABCIG high school for the Father Daughter Dance. There was a luncheon before, and then fathers and daughters gathered in the gym. Multiple colored balloons filled the room and lights down low where there was dancing or just tossing the balloons around. By far, it was the sweetest thing to witness as fathers showed their love to their daughters.
At the OABCIG school board meeting, the Fine arts department shared what they are doing.
Art teachers Marie Sussman, of the Ida Grove Elementary building and Madison Allen, of the Odebolt Elementary and Middle School building, presented examples and information on their class work since the beginning of the school year.
Jacob Welper talked about a piece they are working on to get students talking about mental illness and the work they did with music to support causes to assist with mental health awareness.
The Galva-Holstein Board of Education and the Schaller-Crestland Board of Education met in joint session Monday, March 13 at 7 p.m. in the Holstein media center. Board members in attendance were Tyler Gebers, Don Kalin, Beth Schossow, Jamie Whitmer, Matthew Wittrock and Jeff Witzke, as well as Superintendent Bisenius.
The Board approved the resignation of Jacquelyn Courtright, English-Language Arts teacher at the high school, at the end of the school year. The Board also approved the resignation of Joshua Sussman, High School Principal, at the end of his contract in June.
The OABCIG Middle School Winter Concert blew the audience away on the snowy evening of March 9. The show began with the Seventh-Eighth grade choir directed by Linda Johnson, who delighted the audience with songs such as Be A Light and Moment of Truth. Mindy Miller was the wonderful accompanist on the piano.
Ida County has a new County Assessor, and she is eager to meet and help the public. Claudia Comstock started in November and was joined by Assessor’s Office Manager Dalton Treiber in December. Comstock discussed how she came to be the new Assessor.
For the past 16 years, Denise Van Dusen has been helping people at the Ida County Farm Bureau office located at 409 2nd Street in Ida Grove. Van Dusen came to Farm Bureau after operating an in-home daycare while her 4 children were young. She says when the youngest was about to enter kindergarten, she applied for a sales associate position at the Ida County Farm Bureau office. That position allowed her to learn about Farm Bureau and all that it offers our community. It also opened opportunities to other positions within the office.
The 2nd Annual Health and Vendor Fair at Cobblestone Inn and Suites in Holstein presented speakers and many vendors who serve Ida County. The two speakers were from Cherokee Regional Medical Center with topics such as Advance Care Planning. The vendors were such organizations as Horn Memorial, Angels Care Home Health, Cherokee Regional Medical Center, Golden Horizons and many more. All the vendors had give-aways and spoke of their local services to Ida County.
The Rosemary Clausen Center had a host of great musicians and actors in the talent show titled Holstein’s Got Talent. There were a variety of offerings from a piano solo to a flute solo to an array of vocal soloists, which made the show fabulous on Sunday afternoon, March 12. There were also actors in skits, jokes and an after dinner speech that made the audience roar with laughter.
POPS 2023 Concert performed stunningly at the Rosemary Clausen Center March 6 evening. The directors of this amazing event were Mr. Jonah Kistenmacher and Mrs. Kris Kistenmacher. Playing percussion at times was Adam Dreeszen.
To begin the evening, the Jazz Band wowed us with such musical events as Heart and Soul and My Funny Valentine.
The Concert Choir then paraded the stage in their tie-dyed t-shirts and sparkling sunglasses singing tunes like Party in the USA and The Lion Sleeps tonight. Their fondness of the songs showed wonderfully in the event.
