Squadron 61 Sons of the American Legion presented a check of $2,500 to The Fisher House of Omaha. The squadron has 26 members in this area who give of their time to support vets in any way they can. The Omaha Fisher House is a free hospitality lodging program that offers a warm, compassionate environment and provides families a “home away from home” while their loved one is undergoing inpatient or extensive outpatient treatment at the Omaha VA Medical Center.
Excitement was the emotion felt by board members for the renovation for City Hall which can now begin. Heather Sweeden especially shared joy finally seeing the project underway. Heidi Kuhl reviewed the City Hall financing plan. The total borrowing amount is $2,355,000 at 4.03% interest. The 16 year loan may be repaid utilizing Tax Increment Financing or Debt Service. The final payment is due in 2040. Much was discussed by board members about when it was possible to pay off early.
Alyssa Dreeszen tells of the State Theatre in Holstein, Iowa dreams. Recently, Alyssa has been in part helped to raise around $70,000. Dreeszen states that a couple who really likes the theatre and has memories of good times there agreed to match $25,000 in donations towards bettering the State Theatre. The money will go to building repairs but hopes are to go into another phase of renovating.

Tina Ruiz from Canada with the pen name Tina Griffith has written a book of fiction set in a house in Denison, Iowa. Ruiz has written several novels and children’s books. Look her up on Amazon and you will see the many books she has done. For her most recent book, A Frame in Time she chose the setting in part to be in her brother Gordan Sauck’s house in Denison. Sauck’s recently purchased the house and is remodeling it beautifully.
Odebolt native Cooper DeJean, a graduate of OABCIG high school and current member of the Iowa Hawkeye football team, made an appearance at Rex Chevrolet in Odebolt on Friday. DeJean signed autographs for adults and children alike who have followed his achievements in football.
Since joining the Hawkeyes, DeJean has made quite an impact. This past season, he became a starter on defense and returned three interceptions for touchdowns. He was named MVP of the Music City Bowl in Iowa’s victory over Kentucky.
Rhett Leonard has been a biker for 25 years. It started out when his kids were gone and his wife Kathy would say, “Let’s go for a walk,’ and he would say, “No, I will take my bike.” Leonard said he just got hooked on riding. He quite enjoyed it and then he started working on his own bikes and kinda got good at it so he started working on other people’s bikes. And so it began!
Martha Boyle and her husband Marty own the oldest business in Holstein. Martha is the fourth generation owner of the business McGuire Auction, now called MACI. Boyle speaks softly and strong heartedly of her Dad, Jim McGuire. She told of her father having to charter a plane, hang out strapped from the plane and take aerial pictures of your farm, then take it to be developed. It used to take 6-8 weeks to sell your farm. Nowadays, Boyle said you have to get it all sold in a few days.
A driver who pulled out in front of a semi was killed when the vehicle was struck by a semi. According to a preliminary report from the Iowa State Patrol, a driver of a 2018 Chevy Malibu was stopped at the stop sign on Highway 59 at the junction with Highway 20 and failed to yield to traffic. The driver entered Highway 20 in front of a westbound semi, registered to Elite Logistics, LLC, of Saint Louis Park, Minnesota.
