Janie Fricke! Wow! At the Rosemary Clausen Theatre in Holstein, Iowa. A girl or guy could not get so lucky to get to this show on Jan. 7. Fricke sang her hits such as Don’t Worry ‘Bout Me, He’s a Heartache, and her favorite she told us, It Ain’t Easy Being Easy. And I know Jesus touched my heart when Fricke sang Kris Kristofferson’s Song, Why Me, Lord.
The Ida Grove City Council met on Tuesday, Jan. 3 at 5:30 p.m. in the temporary City Hall at the Rec Center. Council members in attendance were Gregor Ernst, Jeff Miesner, Jared Bogue, and Ange Johnson.
The Arthur city council had their meeting on Jan 3. The council was happy about Santa coming to town December 10th and extremely happy with all the help from everyone involved. The council would like to thank Kailey Childers for soup, the Library Board for the cookies, crackers, books and crafts that were handed out at the event by Santa. They also want to thank Food Pride for the peanuts, UBI for apples and a door prize which were also handed out in the goodie bags by Santa. The council also is thankful for Paul and Kristy Arbegast for two turkeys for door prizes.
The Galva City Council met in special session on Jan. 3. In attendance was Mayor Wanberg and Council members Freese, Hustedt, Langel, and Wuebker.
The Council discussed the water/sewer line bids for 119 Sixth Street. Following discussion of the bid from Bainbridge Construction for $21,383.00. It was decided to dig by the fire hydrant to see if the water line extends west. The City is responsible for the shut off and the owner is responsible for the shut-off into the house. It was decided the city would pay to dig by the hydrant to locate the water line.
The Holstein City Council conducted its regular meeting at City Hall on Tuesday, Jan. 3. In attendance were Mayor Breyfogle and council members Regennitter, Schimmer, Wiese, and Voss.
Sheriff Harriman was present to discuss end of year statistics and what his office has been working on. He also provided some preliminary budget numbers for Holstein’s share of county wide law. The initial estimate is $318,855 but a final number will not be available until February.
The Ida County Board of Supervisors met on Tuesday, Jan. 3 at 9 a.m. in the courthouse. Members in attendance were Chair Raymond Drey, Creston Schubert, and Devlun Whiteing. The Board approved Schubert as 2023 Board Chair and Drey as 2023 Vice Chair.
County Engineer Jeff Williams was present to discuss various road maintenance issues and staffing progress. He also presented the Board with the Fiscal Year 2024 Secondary Road Transfers options. The Board approved a 76% level of transfers which will be $121,325.62 from General Basic and $1,206,684.08 from Rural Basic.
An Iowa Department of Transportation truck treating the roadways was totaled and a flatbed semi was likewise put out of commission after a crash on U.S. 20.
Timothy Jay Hoy, 53, of Anthon, was taken to Horn Memorial Hospital following the crash that took place as he was applying brine solution to the high-way.
Devlun Whiteing says goodbye to the Mayor position of Ida Grove and Hello to the supervisor position of Ida County. Whiteing has served six years as Mayor of Ida Grove. When asked what was the most interesting part of being mayor, he responded it was the staffing. When Whiteing became Mayor, the city had just lost some valuable long-term people, so he was left with building staff. Whiteing states that we did not have a city clerk and had one city hall person. We tried a city administrator but it did not work out. Now we have a great staff and good group of councilmen.
Maureen Hurd-Hause and family orchestrated a serene composition at the King Theatre Dec. 30. Upon visiting with Maureen Hause and husband Evan Hause, it was explained that the night’s performance has a theme of a sense of place. Most certainly it was as they had compositions by musicians who were born in Ida Grove and Battle Creek. Evan Hause had a video presentation with music he called For Maureen which was of a soft blowing breeze in the countryside of Ida County with Maureen gracefully guiding us through the fields with her daughter in her arms.

City Clerk and Treasurer Anita Brandt informed the council that she has accepted the city clerk position with the City of Anthon. The council instructed her to advertise for the position.
The next regular meeting will be Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023.
