Mayor Nathan Weitl called the Ida Grove Council meeting to order at 5:31 p.m. Those present were Jeff Miesner, Jason Schable and Angie Johnson. Gregor Ernst and Jared Bogue were absent. Attorney Justin Reininger, was also present. This reporter, Mary Morgan, was present.
The Mat Rats Wrestling Club in Odebolt has been going on for 34 years now. It is not affiliated with the school, although wrestlers have practiced there. They need more mat time than what the school can offer, so now they are renovating the old Cafe building in Odebolt into a place for all to practice.
LaDonna Miller is a fine longtime member of Odebolt’s townsfolk. Miller, with her sweet demeanor, tells about her life.
“I grew up south of Odebolt, in what people call the Boyer Hills, until I was in 3rd grade. Then, I went from going to a country school to now the school building in Odebolt. The greatest thing I thought, was we got to have hot lunch. I had a classmate that helped me find where everything was and where to go. Her name was Janice Smith. I still tell her today at class reunions how grateful I was for her help.”
Kristina Boysen, owner of 5 Star Dance & Tumbling Academy in downtown Ida Grove, has a lifelong passion for dance. Boysen, an Odebolt native, opened her dance studio in 2005. Her classes attract students from up to an hour away. Boysen explained why she decided to open a dance studio.
“Dance and tumbling has been a part of my life since I was 3,” she stated. “It’s always been a huge passion and something I enjoy, and I wanted to share my love of it with others.”
Boysen described the variety of classes available at her studio.
Margo McMillen is the 17-year-old daughter of Robert and Teresa McMillen. She will be a senior at MVAOCOU High School this fall. Margo enjoys reading, working animals, expanding her flock of chickens, taking walks, babysitting, and spending quality time with people around her.
OABCIG Theatre Department brings us Into the Woods, Jr. The first youth theatre camp at OABCIG was held last week, July 10-14, ending with this play to demonstrate what they learned. There were 25 students from 6th to 8th grade who entered this program. Josie Wulf did a fine job of directing this play with the students. She explained that this particular play, originally directed on Broadway by James Lapine, is a very difficult play to learn. The students performed remarkably.
A new Swine Barn was designed and developed by the Ida County Fair Board in conjunction with The Ida County Agricultural Society.
AgState donated $5,000 to the new swine barn. In a check presentation at the Ida County Fairgrounds, Bob Butcher, Ida County Fair Board member said, “Our funding is currently on track.”
On June 1, 1963, Monsignor Ken Seifried, of Manson, was ordained a Catholic priest. Seven were ordained that same day. His first assignment was Kuemper Catholic High School, where he taught for seven years. In 1970, he joined the Army as a chaplain, serving 28 years in 18 different assignments retiring as a Colonel. In 1997, he was selected to the honor of Monsignor (with no increase in benefits). Returning to the diocese in 1998, he served in two assignments, Granville and Milford, retiring to Holstein in 2009.
Reis Auto Parts and Service in Odebolt, owned by Pat and Becky Reis, is about as family-oriented as a business can get. Four generations of Reis’s have worked at the company, including Pat’s father, himself, his sons, and his grandsons. Pat’s brothers also worked alongside him and their Dad at times. Pat’s son Travis and his wife Becky work there now, along with part-time employee Trey Bender.
Angela Wiebers, owner of Getaway Travel Agency, loves to help people plan a wonderful vacation. Wiebers is a home-based agent, whose office is located west of Schleswig on Highway E16. She described some of the services she offers.
