The Falcon boys basketball team handily defeated Manson-Northwest Webster in a Class 2A playoff opener Thursday night in Ida Grove. The Cougars hung around for about one quarter, trailing only 8-5 after one period of play. OABCIG dominated the second quarter, however, going on a nice run to open up a 14 point halftime lead at 26-12. The Falcons scored a whopping 29 points in the third quarter to push the margin to 55-26 heading into the final period of play. The Cougars played OABCIG evenly in the fourth quarter, but the Falcons cruised to a 30-point victory at 69-39.
After a slow start, the Ridge View girls basketball squad fought their way back into the game and eventually overcame Alta-Aurelia in a Class 2A playoff opener. The Raptors fell behind 10-2 to start the game, but cut the lead to 10-5 at the end of the first quarter. A competitive second quarter ended with Ridge View trailing by a slim 23-20 margin at halftime. The Raptors came out after the halftime break and dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Warriors 18-8 to grab a 38-31 lead heading into the final period of play.
The Falcon boys bowlers took part in the state qualifying meet in Sanborn. Harley-Melvin-Sanborn won the meet to move on to the state tournament, while OABCIG placed third. Ben Hofmeister was the top bowler for the Falcons with a three-game total of 538. Hofmeister’s top score was a 202. Dillon Hanneman was close behind with a three-game total of 526. Hanneman’s top score was a 208. Evan Jordan also cracked the 500 mark with a three-game total of 509. He was followed closely by Connor Hoegh with a 493. Hoegh’s top score was a 201.
It was a real dogfight in Holstein last Monday, as the Okoboji Pioneers came to town to take on the host school Ridge View Raptors in a Class 2A District 2 playoff opener. After falling behind 11-3 to start the game, the Raptors clawed their way back to trim the margin to 11-7 after the first quarter. Ridge View outscored Okoboji by four points in the second quarter to tie the game at 23 going into the halftime break. A hard-fought, evenly matched third quarter ended with the Pioneers up by two at 42-40.
Several OABCIG and Ridge View basketball players are among the leaders in the Western Valley Conference in various statistics. In girls’ play, Madison Stowater of Ridge View is the second leading scorer in the conference with 327 points on the season. Alex Schroeder of OABCIG is the leader in steals with 85, while Shae Dutler of Ridge View is second with 76. Krista Sibenaller of OABCIG is the leader in made free throws with 75.
The Falcon boys basketball squad got off to another fast start on Tuesday night in Alta, taking a 16-2 lead over the home team Alta-Aurelia after one quarter of play. The Warriors were much more competitive in the second quarter, and OABCIG went into halftime with a 32-17 lead. The Falcons outscored Alta-Aurelia by eight in the third quarter, pushing the margin to 53-30 heading into the final period of play. The Warriors finished the game strong, but it was too little too late as OABCIG earned the 65-50 victory.
On Senior Night in Holstein, all five seniors took the floor to start the game against Storm Lake St. Mary’s. Tracin Price, Cael Myrtue, Kyler Wunschel, Grant Movall, and Mason Wolf got the Raptors off to a blazing start, building a 13-2 lead after the first quarter. By halftime, Ridge View had pushed the margin to 31-6. The Raptors came out strong in the second half, as the lead swelled to 46-13 heading into the final period. Ridge View coasted to a 61-22 victory from there.
The Falcons girls basketball squad got off to a hot start on Tuesday night in Alta, building a 17-7 lead after one quarter. The host team Warriors fought back in the second quarter to trim the margin to 24-20 at halftime. In the third quarter, OABCIG extended the lead again to 37-27 heading into the final period of play. Alta-Aurelia once again fought back to tie the game in the fourth quarter. The Falcons were finally able to pull away for good and earn the 53-38 victory.
A talented Newell-Fonda team, ranked second in the state, traveled to Holstein on Friday and bested the home team Raptors. The Mustangs jumped out to a 14-5 lead after the first quarter, then pushed the margin to 35-17 at halftime. Newell-Fonda put together a strong third quarter to take a 52-26 lead into the final period of play, and cruised to the 63-37 win from there.
It was a close match, but in the end, the OABCIG boys bowling team edged past Sioux Central 1,987-1,925. In round one, Connor Hoegh had the high two-game series with a 318. He was followed by Evan Jordan with a 284. Blaise Wilcox fired a 261, while Dillon Hanneman rolled a 256. Marshall Mogensen was right behind him with a 248, and Triston Petersen contributed a 227. In round two, Hoegh had the high score with a 143, followed closely by Jordan with a 141. Right behind them was Wilcox with a 138, while Mogensen fired a 105 and Hanneman contributed a 93.
